Spay & Neuter

At San Angelo Veterinary Hospital, we firmly support the effort to control the pet population with pet spay and pet neuter procedures. As our most common pet surgery requests, we have performed many successful operations at our animal hospital in San Angelo, TX. We strive to keep owners and pets comfortable and follow strict protocols during surgery to ensure success and a pain-free procedure.

How We Keep Animals Comfortable During Pet Surgery

Before surgery, our veterinary team takes labs to ensure a pet is healthy enough to undergo surgical procedures. We then put the animal on IV fluids and administer fully-monitored anesthesia to keep them asleep and out of pain during surgery. In certain cases, we may use oxygen to prevent lung distress.

The Process of Pet Spay & Pet Neuter Surgery

Our experienced veterinarians, Dr. J.T. Henderson, DVM, and Dr. Theresa Feller, DVM, routinely provide sterilization services at our animal hospital. Neutering is a simple 10-15 minute procedure and involves the removal of the testes. During spaying, the female’s ovaries and uterus are removed in a 20-minute surgery. Most pets return home the same day and begin resuming normal activities within a few days. Rarely do complications arise, and 99% of procedures go flawlessly when pets are properly sedated and medicated during the procedure.

The Benefits of Spaying and Neutering Pets

Spaying and neutering do more for pets and their owners than prevent unwanted pregnancies. Pets who have been sterilized tend to be happier and healthier throughout their lifetime. Some additional benefits to be reaped include:

- Having a calmer pet who tends to fret less when in heat or catching the scent of another animal ready to be impregnated.

- Pets tend to wander less in search of mating partners post-sterilization.

- Females stop menstruating, and both sexes tend to release less stinky spraying liquid.

- Pets have reduced chances of developing cancers of the reproductive system (ovarian, uterine, testicular, etc.), which can lead to a longer, healthier life.

If you have any specific concerns or want to learn more about this pet surgery, don't hesitate to let our veterinary team know, as they are happy to answer any questions you may have. After all, we want you to feel confident in your decision to spay or neuter your pet.
